Ball Shavings with Mark London

A goal of this distinguished coach started out on the PBA Tour with a lofty goal, was to become a generational player, giving himself five years to do so. Even though he retired from tour life, after in his words his best season, this PBA tour champion was in the fifth year of the five-year plan.

USBC Hall of Famer and current Junior Team USA Coach Mike Shady cashed in 28 of 34 events despite not making a television finals in his final full season of 1995 but had the foresight to know his progress was not allowing him to be a generational player like his contemporaries Pete Weber, Norm Duke, Brian Voss, Parker Bohn III, Dave Ferraro, his even his tour roommate Marc McDowell.

“I worked hard at my game tapping at every skill set. I was working with a sports psychologist, working with who I thought was the best coach in the world, Bill Straub, took care of myself, studied bowling balls, lane play. If I didn’t bowl well in a tournament, I studied the top 24 match play finalists then I was the guy on Friday night trying to figure it out. So, I just knew could I be a good player, a multi-PBA champion, yes, but my standard was that five-year plan. If I didn’t get to the top of the heap, that was going to be it,” Shady said.

Those five years on tour produced a win at the 1992 Earl Anthony PBA Open, four PBA regional tour wins, and all that studying produced an impressive body of knowledge. But it took three years of bowling under coach Bill Straub at the University of Nebraska and another well-known Bill to spark a coaching resume’ lasting over thirty years.

“Bill Straub is a cause-and-effect guy, very analytical and I also spent a lot of time with Bill Taylor, that was the guy who sparked my coaching interest. I would pick his brain and sit in watching him work with other players. He would come to Lincoln once a month for three days and work with us, then I would listen to him talk about Dick Weber, Don Carter, Mike Durbin, Brian Voss, David Ozio, and Don Johnson and breakdown their games in detail. I really loved hearing how he helped these guys with their games,” Shady added.

With all that knowledge and coaching experience, what does Shady look for in a student he hasn’t seen before?

“The setup is one of the easiest to see, but one of the most important because it sets up the rest of the approach. Timing, swing freedom, footwork, swing direction, inefficient body movement, then see where the hand is at the finish,” then Shady added another important element. “Have to look at the goal of the bowler. For example, a 170 average once a week player may want to get to a 190 to 200 average level. Fine tune the tasks to the player’s goal. In this case, learning how to physically repeat shots more often, get the hand in a stronger position, teach a little lane play, and learn how to shoot a spare.”

Shady further explained areas he teaches his higher end students to be a serious tournament player, there are a lot more skill sets to be addressed such as physical game, mental game, technical (lane play and surface management), and a wellness component (eat, move and sleep), and bowler IQ (general bowling knowledge).

Shady echoed the sentiments of many other coaches stating when improvement occurs, the student wants to see more.

“When see the improvement, you get the bug and want to keep getting better. Then you want to keep challenging yourself more in not only leagues, but tournaments.”

More from Junior Team USA Assistant Coach Mike Shady next week. Until next time, go make some more ball dust.
