If your area has either club teams or officially sanctioned high school bowling, you know it by now.
A majority of high school programs have begun their practices bringing not only more revenue, but a chance to show off your pro shop skills to a new group of customers. The dynamic can be a little different, especially if the program is sanctioned by your state’s high school sports association, allowing students to obtain a varsity letter in the sport. I’ll go into details in a bit.
First, introduce yourself to the program’s coaches if they don’t already know you. You may know them already if they bowl league in your center. If not, it is a good idea since you will more than likely be asked to open up thumb holes, check equipment for proper fitting, and provide equipment for sale as some coaches will discourage players from throwing house balls. If they don’t have bowling background, you may be asked for more information. In either case, the faster you establish yourself as a trusted troubleshooter for the student’s bowling balls and equipment, not only will the students come to you for help, the coaches will also.
As far as the dynamic this one has a few tricky spots, especially for the official high school varsity sports. Like all other sanctioned high school sports, there are specific rules in place for interaction time between student/athletes and coaches.
Another person you may have to deal with is the school’s athletic director. In my area, we see the AD once a season during a practice and at high profile matches. If the AD sees support for the program, that is always a big plus.
Another group you will have to see quite a bit is the parents of the student/athletes. Undoubtedly, many of them are going through being the parent of a varsity athlete for the first time with all the issues. Besides the outside instruction limits, there’s all the science and physics of the balls and lanes you’ll have to break down, especially if they don’t know bowling other than what they’ve seen during family open bowling.
Presenting yourself in a positive manner will pay off now and down the road because you never know who is watching. What you think is random act of kindness will more than likely be brought up to you at a most unexpected moment.
Until next time, go make some more ball dust.
We would like to announce our new Twisted Series!
