Ball Shavings with Mark London

Growing up around newspapers, it was fun to watch people react if they got their name in the local newspaper for something good. Pro shops can do something similar with ball displays. With each honor score, take a bright piece of poster board, cut out a star or similar shape to attract a look and write the bowler’s name and score then post it on part of the ball talker. This not only congratulates the bowler, it also is a subtle way to sell a particular ball but also brag that you can drill balls which can produce honor scores.

For the regular shop visitors, it also keeps everyone up to date about the latest honor scores. The scores don’t have to be rolled in your home center, either. Could be at nationals, could be at amateur tour event, state tournament, or in any sanctioned event elsewhere. Personally, I would not list a 300 at a no tap event, unless it was an actual 12-bagger, but that’s just me.

For your social media, take a photo of the bowler standing next to the new sign, or as some shops do, record a video of the bowler placing the sign on the ball talker. Another way to keep the bowler’s name and the shop’s name out there is to make a video of the bowler talking about the characteristics of the ball and throwing a few shots to illustrate his claim. Keep in mind, the newer the ball, the better.  It’s tough to push sales of a ball no longer in production unless you have a bunch of them you need to unload. One exception would be a first time 300 shooter who may still be stunned the game was shot. That would be a great personal interest story many bowlers would appreciate.

You could also start a thread of these videos to play on a video screen in the shop for people to watch as they pick up a blank drill over the holidays. You can also mix in ball review videos found elsewhere on social media to keep pacing of the videos not to bore the viewer. This is a time where if you haven’t found a regular customer who has a skill set to help manage such a task, put the word out and find one.

There are enough ball company staffers and independents who produce such videos to add to the shop videos. Check the ball company YouTube sites for videos on current balls, many also offer other videos about other related topics.

There are also great sources for instructional material from numerous online sources for your video presentation. I’ll be reviewing those in the coming weeks.

Producing social media videos is a 21st century version of seeing your name in the newspaper.

Until next time, go make some more ball dust.
