ARLINGTON, Texas –The International Bowling Pro Shop and Instructors Association board of directors has elected Tom Zernia as President on January 15, during their annual board meeting held during the BPAA Bowling Summit in Tempe, Ariz. Jordan Vanover was elected as Vice President and Steve Barinque as Secretary. Each will serve a two-year term beginning immediately.
Zernia is runs a one-man Pro Shop located inside Kingpin Bowl in West Bend, Wisc. He has been on the IBPSIA board for six years and served as vice president for the past two years. During that time he has been on the education, bylaws and awards committees.
He began his career in bowling as a pinchaser in 1959. When the Marine Corp came calling in 1962, Zernia answered and became an aircraft hydraulics technician. Needing to keep up his bowling connection, he also worked part-time at the base bowling center as a night mechanic, which eventually got him transferred to special services, full time.
“The industry is changing every few years and I joined IBPSIA to keep up with the trends”, said Zernia. “Going to the Master Class taught me so much about the marketing and coaching part of the pro shop industry. I had no idea what I was missing out on. I still believe continuing education is extremely important, and I’m a 74 year old man.” While education is a focal point for Zernia, he also believes that the networking opportunities associated with being an IBPSIA member is icing on the cake. “We are constantly sharing marketing strategies, drilling techniques and other pertinent industry information.”
Moving from the secretary position to vice president is Jordan Vanover. “Pro shops will always be the most vital part of our industry and there is no value that can be put on quality craftsmanship” said Vanover. IBPSIA was founded on making sure it's members and operators are the most educated and skilled in their craft. I am proud to be a part of IBPSIA and what it stands for.”
He is a Product Specialist for Brunswick Bowling Products, an IBPSIA Master Instructor, and was a collegiate All-American at Saginaw Valley State. His many
coaching accolades include Turbo Tech Associate Coach, Silver International Instructor, USA Bowling National Instructor, and has been named as a Bowlers Journal top 100 Coaches for the past seven years.
Steve Barinque hails from the military ranks, having retired after twenty-six years of active duty in the Air Force. He is the general manager for Joint Base San Antonio Bowling and IBPSIA Master Instructor He is a USBC Silver Coach, Air Force Bowling Coach and five time Bowlers Journal top 100 Coaches. As head coach of the Steele High School Bowling Team, he led the team to back-to-back Texas State Champions, 2016 and 2017.
